Why oh why are the airport toilets closed when you really need to go? You know when nature just can’t hold out any longer and you have to go.
This is a dilemma I faced in the early hours of Tuesday morning whilst travelling through Dubai airport.
Are you a long distance traveller who has ventured through Dubai airport? If so you’ll know that the toilets are quite wide spread throughout the airport. Yet in a 5 minute spell I found three toilets in close proximity to each other yet all closed at the same time.
For some reason Dubai airport peaks in the middle of the night. As the major hub in the Middle East it is a flurry of activity as most international flights take off and land around the midnight hour. Bustling through the crowds can be a challenge. Whilst I like Dubai airport, it is a pain when it is too crowded.
Thankfully as a business class traveller I am able to use the lounge and often the only airport toilets I use are the ones in the lounge. You can reserve your place in a Dubai lounge too. My connecting flight however did leave at silly o’clock, well okay scheduled for 4:40am.
An hour before 4:40am is when most of the overnight flights have left so the airport is less crowded. This is the time when I got up to head towards my flight but thought I’d go to the loo on the way.
My first attempt was the toilet in the lounge. Yes, there was no success there since the “toilet closed” sign was up. This was only temporary as it was being cleaned.
Unperturbed I thought that I’ll head towards the gate and find one on the way. Find one I did to be greeted with the toilet closed sign, again for cleaning. There was even a small queue to get in and one guy pushed past the barrier, much to the agitation of the cleaners and locked himself in the cubicle.
A little frustrated I thought it best not to wait here, it could be a while. So off I headed looking for the next airport toilet.
Sure enough “toilet closed”, again for cleaning. Why oh why do they clean all the toilets at the same time?
I remained determined to relieve myself of nature’s call before queuing at the gate to board. I was successful in finding a fourth airport toilet only this time not closed!
Finally able to enjoy the call of nature I couldn’t help but notice two cleaners in the Gents cleaning away. So yet again another airport toilet being cleaned at the same time.
If Dubai airport think it is a good idea to have all the toilets closed for cleaning at the same time could they please explain what all us passengers are supposed to do? Surely if you stagger the cleaning of toilets or send a smaller number of cleaners round to perform a circuit of the loos we wouldn’t have the inconvenience at the convenience.
Have you ever encountered such an issue where all the toilets you visited were closed or out of order? Feel free to share your experience in the comment box below.
I’ve visited many of the Dubai airport toilets during the early hours of Tuesday morning. I saw many signs saying “Toilets Closed”. Yet what I can say is… they are very clean!
