What would you do if the world was about to end? It is indeed an old dinner party question yet it is explored well in the film “Seeking a friend for the end of the world”.
The film starring Steve Carrell and Keira Knightley explores this from a human rather than heroistic perspective. It also explores it very well.
You may think what does a website dedicated to travel have to do with the end of the world? Well whilst on a plane you have hours to fill and hopefully I can help you with your film selections. I rarely go to the cinema nowadays and tend to catch up with the latest releases whilst travelling.
This film is 101 mins long, apparently. The film does fly by though and doesn’t seem anywhere near that long, with or without the credits.
The issue of what to do when the world ends is explored with a range of characters in “Seeking a friend for the end of the world”. If you imagine what you would do then you’ll probably find a character in here who sums up what your perceived response will be.
The film opens with Dodge (Steve Carrell) and his wife Linda (played by Nancy Carrell) sat in a car listening to the radio as it is announced that attempts to stop Asteroid Matilda striking earth have failed. As a result there are only 21 days before the end of the world.
Without a word being spoken Dodge’s wife leaves the car and runs off, never to be seen again. Later in the film we find out that she has been having an affair and seeks to be with the one she loves as the world ends.
It is this theme which runs throughout the entire film. What would you do if the world is about to end is explored in many themes. There are the people who are depressed and down hearted. There are the joyous ones who want to party and break all the rules.
There is the desire to be with family and loved ones. A spirit of drugs and free love (or “End of the World sex” as Keira Knightley’s character calls it.)
Even though our two lead characters spend a night in a jail cell. Law and order is soon lost.
In fact rioting sets the storyline up well as Dodge seeks to save his neighbour Penny (the always delightful Keira Knightley) from a riot as their apartment block is set on fire.
So they begin their journey. Dodge seeks to find his one true love of his life to share their mutual adoration for each other. Penny however has missed her last ever flight home (all flights stop weeks before Armageddon) and wants to get back to her parents.
The question of what would you do if the world is about to end is explored in many ways. We even meet a character who is looking for a hit man to kill him in a form of suicide; although there is a plot of him being terminally ill as well.
A restaurant called “Friendlys” shows the attitude of some which can be summed up as who cares about partnerships and commitment, let’s make out or have sex with the whoever we fancy.
Throughout the film the thoughts I would express are explored. If I ask myself “What would you do if the world was about to end?” then going to work and the value of money would soon be lost, Surely if you went to work it would be because it was something you enjoyed. The live to work and work to live ideal raises its head.
There are the characters who challenge the status quo and address the what if scenario. What if it is not the end of the world and the forecasts are wrong? These characters set themselves in a bunker all set for after the world ends and plan to survive and preserve the human race.
Overall the script is not too demanding for our actors, but the theme is thought-provoking.
I found myself considering my options if I knew I had 21 days left on this earth.
In fact, come to think of it what would you do if the world was about to end? Would you riot and loot? Would you remain faithful to the one you are with? Is going to spend your final days with family and friends your priority? Or is it to seek to pursue your sexual desire of the guy/girl you never quite hooked up with? Feel free to share your comments in the comment box to this page.
For me it was a very thought-provoking film which explored a lot of human elements we would likely see.
Whilst we can imagine what our reaction would be, do we honestly really know. So I leave you with the ultimate after dinner party question, what would you do if the world was about to end?
The film is released in the UK Monday 5th November 2012.
