As a law abiding citizen it is a little strange for me to complete my Magic Of Melbourne series with the concept of street art. Otherwise known as graffiti the drawing/spraying of art on a range of buildings which the artist doesn’t own is seen as a crime in most places.
Numerous councils spend fortunes cleaning public buildings from what is seen as a blight on the landscape. Indeed street art is illegal in Melbourne. However building owners can apply to keep the graffiti on their buildings which is permitted in various areas. None more so than Hosiery Lane. Other side streets around the CBD do have street art so feel free to wander and explore.
In appreciation of Street Art I’ll show below some of the Melbourne art I found. Which ones do you like?
To round off this post I’ll include probably my favourite piece of street art. These two guys are perfectly legal and I love to pop along to Swanston Street to say “Hello” every time I’m in town.
What do you think of street art? Does it add to the Magic of Melbourne or is it a blight on the scenery?
