The Spring Hill Suites Latrobe is a new hotel close to Latrobe airport. It is in immaculate condition and offers all the high quality you’d expect from a Marriott branded hotel.
Now I’ll be honest with you, to date I’ve never done a paid hotel review before and that still hasn’t changed. This review is 100% independent (other than affiliate links which guarantee you the best price anywhere on the internet). I paid my bill when I checked out (speedy checkout, don’t you just love it?) and received no special privileges.
So no compensation for me which means that you know this is an honest review. So why am I writing about the Marriott’s Springhill Suites hotel Latrobe? It is because I love it, like I love all the Marriott hotels I’ve stayed in.
They are such a consistent high quality brand. Whether you stay in the high class “Marriott” branded hotels or the lower range “Residence Inn” or “Fairfield Inn” you’ll get real value for money.
A look inside Spring Hill Suites Latrobe Hotel
Spring Hill Suites by Marriott are far from the highest class of brand on offer, in fact they are towards the lower price range yet offer so much.
I’ve stayed in a few Marriott lower brand hotels and many don’t offer evening meals yet this one did. There was a limited range of food options in the bar/lobby area in the evenings. No room service though.
They are called Suite Hotels for a reason and that means a fridge and a microwave in the room. I say room, it is a suite really. There is the arrival area (where you’ll find the fridge and microwave). A lounge about area, work desk, bedroom. A shower room with sink plus a separate toilet room.
Now unfortunately there is no kitchen as such, well that would be an apartment rather than a suite wouldn’t it? However, downstairs by Reception was what is called “The Market”. This is where you can pick up some quick food or beverages 24 hours a day. Quick, switch on that microwave!
Of course why pay hotel prices? The Springhill Suites by Marriott is located very close by to a Kmart and a Wal-Mart. Walking distance in fact. But hey when in Rome, sorry America lets be like the locals and drive.
As I mentioned this is a hotel by Latrobe airport. My window in fact looked out towards the airport, not that I’d realise. It seems to be a very quiet airport with hardly any planes coming in or out. Not to worry though there is a hotel shuttle bus in case you need a flight.
You could say it is one of the hotels near Pittsburgh PA so you can also take a flight from there, but it is about an hour’s drive away.
So what else do you get in the room, erm sorry I mean suite?
Well there is complimentary wifi, love it! There is an option of high speed wifi at a price yet to be honest the free wifi in the hotel worked really well. It was fast and efficient and also available in the lobby area.
The work desk in the room was a good height (I’m sat there now writing this) and also had an overhead light, telephone plus an Ethernet cable, just in case you haven’t caught on with the wifi revolution.
There is a large, flat screen Panasonic TV. From the TV guide I made out there were 113 channels. (Don’t get too excited, when you channel hop all you see are commercials – welcome to American TV people!)
The bed side table in the Marriott Spring Hill Suites was quite exciting. There was another phone, a large bed side lamp and a fabulous clock radio with iPod docking station. Perfect for me since I can use the TuneIn Radio app and listen to UK radio as I fall asleep.
The bed side table also had a copy of the Holy Bible and The Book of Mormon. Sorry Muslims, the Spring Hill Suites Latrobe hasn’t quite got round to catering for you yet.
The wardrobe was double door and of adequate size. There was the all important iron and ironing board so a big tick from me.
One of the hangers also featured a leaflet telling me that the Springhill Suites Latrobe PA hotel offered a laundry or dry cleaning service. But why bother, there was a guest laundry room downstairs beside the swimming pool. It cost from $1.50 per cycle in a washing machine or in a dryer so get those quarters at the ready.
I saw that the hotel provided laundry washing powder from Reception (as well as complimentary Chupa Chups but that’s a different story!). When I enquired about this I was given a box of washing powder and a box with some Bounce dryer towels (that is Bounce the brand, not an instruction of what to do with the box!).
As I received these from the charming and smiley hotel receptionist I offered my room number (not as an invite but) as a way for her to charge these to my room. Her reply was swift “Oh no, these are complimentary”. Brilliant I thought, then I had an idea…………
The Spring Hill Suites Hotel as I say had a swimming pool. It was quite small but sufficient for a light dip, that is when the children aren’t in it. It often seems that when I stay in American hotels the hotel pool is always full of little kids so there is no room for an adult swim.
There was even a night during this stay when I saw parents bring 4 kids down in the elevator to the pool at 9pm at night! Yes, 9pm. One of the kids was no doubt less than 3 years old. Blimey at that time I was about to go to bed myself.
Just when am I supposed to get a chance to use the pool for a swim myself? (Answer:- Sunday afternoons are best – that’s when most of the families have gone and the hotel is mostly empty.)
There was also an exercise room. I often saw an adult in there. However I never saw a child in the exercise room, not once; slackers!
Once I returned to my room I was able to admire and enjoy the Marriott hotel bed. I often think Marriott provide the best hotel beds in the world so I was delighted to use it.
It was a little weird though, each day on the bed I’d find a little love note from the maid. Oops sorry she’s called the “Guest Room Attendant” – is that some sort of promotion or politically correct thing?
Anyway it was an opportunity not to be missed so I left a little love note of my own 🙂
We pined for each other….
I checked out.
We never met.
Ah well, missed opportunities.
Like many lower range hotels in the US the Spring Hill Suites by Marriott offered a complimentary buffet breakfast. There were a range of cereals including oatmeal (porridge to you and me), yoghurts (pronounced “yo-gert” by the locals), bagels, some fruit, scrambled egg (everyday), plus another hot dish, typically sausage meat. You’d also find the odd cold meat slice, boiled egg and a waffle machine.
Hot coffee was always available in the lobby area, always (except for when they ran out). Also, as is typically American if you want a white coffee you have to pick a flavour. None of this British just add milk nonsense. You could have hazelnut flavoured cream, vanilla or even half and half (which is basically half milk and half cream). My favourite is cow juice flavour, where is that?
Now there was one extra feature to the Springhill Suites Hotel in Latrobe PA. It was built with great honour to local hero and golfer Arnold Palmer. All around the lift (elevator) area were wall decorations commemorating his career.
There is even a portrait of him with Mr Marriott himself, sweet.
It was all very inspiring and motivational, especially with his Latrobe Country Club golf course just down the road. You’d often see golfers, especially at the weekend staying in the hotel. I thought about joining them but only briefly, maybe for less than a nano second. I hate golf, I can’t stand it. But hey, each to their own.
The hotel even offered an Arnold Palmer cocktail! How exciting would that be to have a cocktail named after you?
So there it is. My independent review of the Springhill Suites Hotel Latrobe PA. Another top notch hotel from the Marriott chain. I’ll definitely stay there again sometime soon.
