As you may remember, due to a cancelled flight I had an unexpected stay at NH Hoteles Schipol Airport.
My outbound flight with KLM was cancelled and I was routed to wait in Amsterdam until the next morning to catch the next available flight.
KLM advised that I was to catch the complimentary hotel shuttle bus outside the airport terminal. As instructed I went to the waiting area and had to wait around 10-15 minutes for the bus. The shuttle bus was in fact a small mini-bus holding around 8 passengers at a time.
Not only was I to encounter an unexpected stay at NH Hoteles Schipol Airport but I would encounter luggage mayhem too.
I was close to the front of the queue for the shuttle bus and as a solo traveller I went straight to the rear of the bus as it arrived. I was ready to load up my luggage and grab my seat. Somehow this proved a bad move. Whilst I was loading my luggage everyone else travelling in couples worked as team. The female in the party would board the bus and grab two seats whilst the male would load the luggage. Once I got onto the bus everyone would tell me that the seat was taken by their partner who was still queuing to load their luggage!
Feeling pretty hard done by I had to tell the driver he couldn’t set off since I couldn’t get a seat and had to unload my luggage. I was a pretty grumpy guy at this point. Travelling alone has various disadvantages and this a new and highly unfair one as far as I was concerned.
Not only was my flight cancelled with KLM but now I was delayed enjoying my stay at NH Hoteles Schipol Airport since I didn’t have anyone in my team to hold a seat for me.
Thankfully there was less of a rush when the second shuttle bus arrived and I was able to get a seat.
My stay at NH Hoteles Schipol Airport
NH Hoteles are quite a big chain of hotels in The Netherlands so it is little wonder that they have teamed up with their national airline.
The NH Hoteles Schipol Airport location was a short drive from the airport itself, although admittedly too far to walk. In fact I would say it was outside of the airport grounds. In spite of this you could still see aircraft coming in to land from the hotel car park.
I presented my KLM voucher to the clerk at the check-in desk of the hotel. As he was assigning me a room I noticed, amongst other things in this fancy lobby that they also had wifi in the hotel. On enquiring about wifi he gave me voucher for free (my favourite price) wifi access. I think I was quite privileged since they seemed to be charging other people. Maybe as a Business Class traveller this is a perk I am entitled to.
I suspect that I was in a higher grade room too. There was a distinct difference in the appearance of bedroom doors I passed before getting to my corridor which had much nicer doors.
The room was fairly compact but comfortable. A cosy bed, tea and coffee making facilities, nice toiletries in the bathroom and the all important iron and ironing board!
The hotel had a few restaurants, which varied on opening times.
There was also a range of health centre features. Unusual I thought for a hotel was the inclusion of a range of squash courts. I love squash and would have been delighted to have a game. Unfortunately because this was an unexpected stay at NH Hoteles Schipol Airport I didn’t have my racquet or anybody to play with.
There was also the standard exercise room which appeared to have lots of modern equipment. There was a smallish swimming pool which proved quite popular.
Eating at NH Hoteles Schipol Airport
On checking-in to the hotel after my flight was cancelled I was told that I was entitled to an evening meal in a designated restaurant. It was still late-midday and I was hungry at this point. Apparently I was not entitled to free lunch, only free dinner and breakfast.
Whilst settling into my room I ordered room service and opted for Chicken Thigh Satay. It came with white cabbage salad, satay sauce, prawn crackers and French fries. All at a cost of €18:50 plus a small delivery charge.
Service was within half an hour and the food was pretty good all things considered.
By the time of the evening meal I was hungry again so went down to the designated restaurant. From the looks of things it was not only I who had an unexpected stay at NH Hoteles Schipol Airport, there were quite a few people in this restaurant. Instead of a la carte menus there was a self service buffet. This was a combination of cold starters, salad and such like. A couple of soups plus some hot meat and vegetable dishes with rice or pasta. There was also a selection of appealing desserts. Water seemed to be the only free drink that I could remember.
With it being a self-service buffet you could eat to your fill and I did 🙂
Overall the Hotel was adequate for a layover. Comfortable, smart and a range of facilities to cater for a layover. Whilst I would not want the circumstances to arise again I did enjoy my unexpected stay at NH Hoteles Schipol Airport.
