When it comes to footwear there is undoubtedly a right way and a wrong way on how to wear sandals. This is especially true if you are a Brit abroad.
The humble sandal is one of the oldest and yet most practical forms of footwear. If you find a pair that suits you, it fits comfortably, allows your feet to breathe and avoids sweaty, stinky feet.
To benefit from using sandals you need to know how to wear sandals properly.
The answer is simple, you should wear sandals bare foot.
Naturally the sandal is a footwear designed for temperate or warm climates, not cold countries. This might explain why Brits especially are found wanting in the wearing of sandals when holidaying abroad.
Too often you will see sandals worn with socks. Well everybody, that really is uncool and not the way to go.
In fact if you are a guy, then wearing socks with sandals is a sure fire way to repulse the girls, just like two negative ends of magnets repulse each other.
I guess us Brits make the mistake of socks with sandals because we are so used to putting socks on before footwear. I must admit to making this mistake in the past (accidentally I may add, not on purpose) and my dear bride was quick to point out the errors of my ways!
I find wearing sandals quite liberating, apart from sand getting stuck under the soles of my feet when on the beach.
As readers will know sandals win hands down for me compared to the awful things known as flip flops which seem to be popular nowadays. (Did you know the name Australians use to describe flip flops? If not read this article to find out what it is.)
For me, flip flops are over priced, flimsy pieces of rubber. They barely stay to your feet as they are only held on by a grip between your toes. They make a horrible flip, flip sound as you walk and must be some kind of hazard due to the risk of them slipping off. On the plus side they are totally impractical to wear with socks.
As for sandals, I think they are great. They are comfortable, with a strap around the back of your ankle they provide secure support without any danger of slipping off. On the downside, if you know how to wear sandals properly, (that is without socks,) you can have strange looking feet if you get sunburn!
So please fellow Brits when you go abroad please remember how to wear sandals properly, that is without socks!
