Schiphol Airport Amsterdam is like a second home to me. As a frequent flier for over a decade I’ve spent more time here than my local airport.
(By the way, is that frequent flier or flyer?)
My local airport in the beautiful county of Yorkshire is not directly serviced from any of the London airports. Crazy I know.
KLM of The Netherlands do service my airport so I frequently use them and go via their hub in Amsterdam.
As you can see it is pretty popular. In 2012 it was voted Europe’s number 1 airport.
So let me take you on a photographic tour of Schiphol Airport Amsterdam.
When you first arrive you’ll have to collect your luggage from the Arrivals Hall.
Even in November they’ve put up the Christmas trees to get you in the spirit 🙂
Be careful though, you don’t want to get trollied!
Once you get through Customs don’t rush off just yet. You’ll encounter lots of exciting shops, just look!
There are lots of shops to see. Although admittedly like most airports maybe not the cheapest.
However when you come out here how about turning right for a quick detour.
You’ll soon find a cool shop for souvenirs called “Planes @ Plaza”.
This shop is even more exciting because outside of it is a mock up front end of a plane!
It gets even better. You can go inside and even enter the cockpit, look!
If you don’t quite fancy that or have had enough of planes. Don’t worry, you can have a little wonder around, meet the locals. Some of them are quite tall you know.
So you’ve finished mixing with the locals and touring Amsterdam, or wherever you’ve been in The Netherlands.
After revisiting Planes @ Plaza for that model plane you check in and are back in the terminal.
The great thing about Schiphol is that although it is a large airport it is all in one terminal. No connecting buses or trains to get to your gate.
However if you are in transit from outside the Schengen countries of Europe but are travelling to a Schengen country there is one complication. You need to queue here.
It can get quite busy so get there early. Once through this passport control there are a whole host of gates for various flights around Europe.
Don’t worry there are shops and lounges on the other side. Get through early so you can find your gate and relax.
I rarely go through this area so I’ll continue my tour of the main terminal at Amsterdam’s Airport.
There’s plenty of room to walk to your gate in the terminal.
So you’ve just arrived or are in transit. You’ve got an hour or two until your next flight, so what are you going to do?
Surprisingly there is a lot to do at Schiphol Airport, after all it is Europe’s number 1 airport.
Like all big airports there are plenty of options for the shopper.
You’ll find these ones at the Holland Boulevard side of the airport.
Don’t miss the other shops where you can of course buy…..
Clogs of course!
Or maybe tulips from Amsterdam?
Or maybe something else is on your list? How about this?
Okay, so maybe your flight is a good few hours away and you really have some time to kill. How about a quick tour of Amsterdam? At one side of Holland Boulevard you’ll find the excursions desk.
Money burning a hole in your pocket?
Are you a bit of a risk taker? Do you have some spare euro or other currency in your pocket which you fancy putting to use? Well Amsterdam’s Schipol Airport has just the thing for you. How about a Casino?
Hey just because it’s an airport doesn’t mean that it is all shopping and gambling. There is culture too!
Did you know that Schiphol has a Grand Piano? Well, yes it does.
Quite close by to the piano you can also find a museum.
Or maybe you were close to the D gates and found an artful style seat or two?
This might surprise you. I dare say if you walked across from the car park outside you thought this was all a load of balls?
Okay, so you’ve had enough of shopping and culture. You just want to relax before your flight. How about a massage?
Or maybe you want to venture upstairs where you’ll find a food court and some bars to unwind. Or instead of that really treat yourself to some spa treatment.
Or maybe you need a quick sleep because you are tired. Upstairs is where you’ll find a viewing gallery and some quiet spots with loungers.
Maybe you need to freshen up or have a lie down? Why not try a shower or use a room at the Mercure hotel?
Well it is a thought, didn’t your girlfriend just shop at Victoria’s Secret? 😉
Or, maybe your budget didn’t stretch quite so far. Thanks to AdventurousKate I recently heard about Yotel. And yes Schiphol Airport Amsterdam has it’s very own Yotel!
Okay, maybe that is not your thing. You need time to reflect, relax and be one with the Lord. Well there is just the place for you upstairs and it is suitable for all sorts of religions just look!
My Favourite Place
Well whilst you are upstairs I’m sure you’ve noticed my favourite place. The place I tend to hang out for some proper luxury whilst travelling.
Of course I mean this place.
So let me show you…….
Oops, sorry I forgot. You’re flying Economy. That’s too bad I can’t bring you in. (If you want to know what it is like inside have a peek here.)
Did you enjoy my photographic tour of Schiphol Airport Amsterdam? Hopefully you found something new or of interest. Hopefully you’ll know what you want to do before you arrive next time.
